NO PICURE OR SOUND. STANDBY LIGHT BLINKS TWO TIMES [SONY KV-HA & KV-HW] WEGA SERIES TVS

Set switches ON without any problem, and after a second, the standby ligh blinks twice and switches OFF.
The fault is due to some shorted component/s on the main circuit board.  The system control detects this situation, and switches OFF the power supply regualtor section.
Probable causes are;
[1] Horizontal output transistor [2SD2624-CA - Q801] Collector to emitter short.
[2] Fly back transformer [FBT]  [NX 4751 M3A4 - T503]:  Internal winding short.
[3] Deflection Yoke.  Internal winding short.  This is a very rare case.
[4] Any capacitors at the horizontal output section.
Check:
Disconnect or desolder out [L 600], temporarly, and connect a 100W filment type bulb across [C614 - 33MFD 160V] Switch ON the TV and measure the voltage across C614.  It should be around 133 to 137VDC.  Be sure this voltage is steady.
If it is OK;
Switch OFF the set, and measure the resistance to collector and emitter of Q801.  It should be never show below 50Ohms.  If the measured resistance shows below this range; desolder out the horizontal output transsistor from circuit, and measure the collector to emitter resistance.  It should never come to Zero.  If it shows no resistance [0 Ohms], make sure the transistor is defective.
But, before replacing this transistor, We have to make sure that the Flyback Transformer is OK.  The flyback transformer cannot be checked by normal methods.  But there is a syptom to get it.
Repalce the horizontal output transistor with a new one.  Fix it with all it fixures with heat sink. REPLACE [C812 - 0.033MFD] WITH A NEW ONE as a precautionary measure;  Because, if this capacitor has open circuit, the flyback transistor will blow out as soon as we switch ON the set.

Switch On the set.  If the flyback transformer is OK, and there is no other shorted components in the horizontal output stage, the set must come ON without any problem.
If it shuts down again, unplug the set from AC mains socket, and feel the heat of the newly fitted horizontal output transistor.  It may slighly warm, but never overheat.  If it overheats, be sure that the FBT is faulty, and should be replced.
Images of flyback transformer and horizontal output transistor are attached.

SONY WEGA SERIES PIN CUSHION DISTORTION repair KV-HA and KV-HW SERIES

The vertical lines on the right and left side of the TV will look somewhat bend inside, and the width of the picture will be less; somewhat distorted picture.

The pin-cusion [East-West] amplifier output section has the fault.

Check and replace two pin-drive transistors [Q850 - MSD 601-RT1(NPN TYPE); Q851 - MSB 709-RT1(PNP TYPE), & Pin output FET Q802.  Replace zener diode [D805] too. Check the voltage at the collector point of Q850.  It should be around 8.5VDC.  Never attempt to measure the voltage at the source of the FET.  The multimeter might be damaged.

If this do not help you, replace the two ICs used there [MC4558CD & NJM2903M].  Bothe ICs are easy to get from most of the electronics spare part shops, and are cheap to buy.
When replace the FET at the pin output section, be sure to make a it tight with its heatsink.  apply heatsink compond to get good heat transfer.

SONY WEGA TRINITRON KV-HA & KV-HW SERIES TVs HORIZONTAL OUTPUT TRANSISTOR BLOWS OUT

Horizontal output transistor [2SD2624-CA] blows off as soon as the set is switched ON; without allowing time to find the fault by any measuring instruments.

There are two resons for this fault.
The first one is with its deflection yoke.  If any turns in the winding of the deflection yoke get shorted each other, the horzontal output transistor will get shorted [collector to emitter].  But this fault is very rare to Sony Televisons.
The second one is with fault capacitors at the horizontal output circuit.
Beofre switch ON the set, after replacing the horizontal output transistor, replace these capcitors.  [C-812-0.033MFD; C-811-1MFD 250V; C-807-330PF 2KV; C-808 0.0082MFD; C-814 12KPF; C-813 330PF.
In most cases, dry soldering points at the terminals of C-812 or value detereiation of this capacitor will be the cause. If you switch ON the set without C-812, it is sure and certain that the horizontal output transisoor will get shorted.  Replace this capacitor with same capacitance value.  If the value changes, it will effect both high-tesion voltage and width of the picture. Select a good quality one.

This fault is common to all CRT based televisions, irrespective of brand.

NO PICTURE. SOUND OK.  FOUR BLINKS FO STANDBY LED AFTER SWITCH ON [SONY WEGA SERIES KV-HA & KV-HW SERIES TVs]

Set switches ON and the standby light at its front panel blinks four times, and switches OFF.  This repeats each time switch ON the set. The fault is with its vertical output section.  This model sets has Bus chassis, and a self diagnosing circuits in the system control section always look into other components’ functions, and if a malfunction is noted, the main system control IC will send a stop signal to main power supply regulator section, stops it to prevent further damage.
The most common fault found with this type of four blinks and shut down, is due to loose solder terminals at the Vertical Output IC.  This IC [AN 5512], will heat up to an extent, screwed on to a metal heat sink to radiate heat from it while it works.  Repeated heating and cooling might make the solder terminals to this IC to get loose contacted. Normally, these loose contacts are very difficult to detect, they will be microscopic in dimension.  It is a good practice, that suck out the solder on all solder terminals of this IC and resolder it with fresh solder.  This must solve the problem.  Failure of this IC is very rare.  Check this power supply rail too.  It is powered at its pin number (2) and (4). The voltage applied is [+13VDC] at pin number 2 and [-13VDC] at pin number 4.  These voltages are generated and supplied from Line Output transformer pins (7) & (9) respectively.

NO PICTURE. SOUND OK. SONY [KV-HA & KV-HW VEGA SERIES TRINITRON TVs]

Check the voltages at pins 1, 2 & 3 of (CN 703), at video amplifier card [picture tube base card].  If found abnormal, or less than 0.5VDC or so, the chroma IC on the A board should be suspected.  But before making it sure, just check the voltages at the video output pins [Pin 19, 20 & 21] of IC TDA 8844/N2.  It should be around 3VDC or so.  If there is no voltage at all, check the 9VDC bus from the SMPS power supply. This voltage comes out from a controlled regulator.  Check the voltage at the cathode of D314.  Must be 9VDC.  If not, check the voltage at its anode.  If there is no voltage at the anode of this diode, make sure that the controlled regulator is not working.  May be damaged or 9V regulator IC has damaged or not switching ON by the system control. If there is 9VDC at the cathode of D314, then check the voltage at pin number 37 of TDA 8844/N2.  If there is no voltage, check L312 for open circuit.  If these voltages are OK and still there is no voltage at the video output pins of the chroma IC TDA8844/N2, check the voltage at Pin number 7 & 8 [Serial Clock and Serial data respectively]. They should measure about 4.6VDC.  These voltages are comes to chroma IC from system control IC If there is no voltage at these pins, leave the chroma section, and come towards main system control section [IC CXP85***].
If serial data and serial clock voltages are OK, and there is 9VDC at pins 37&12 of TDA 8844/N2, and still there is no voltages at the video output pins stated above, touch the top of the main chroma IC TDA8844/N2, and feel the heat generated by it.  It can be moderately heated, but not overheated.  If it overheats, while all the above said voltages are ok, there is no further checking needed.  The IC is defective, and should be replaced.

HOW TO REPAIR VIDEO OUTPUT SECTION TO SONY WEGA [KV-HA AND KW-HA] SEIRES TVs

NO PICUTRE; SOUND OK; BLACK SCREEN - Troubleshooting

Check the voltages at CRG socket pins [8. 9 & 10].  If these voltages are found high (almost equal to video output supply voltage 200VDC], the chroma IC should be suspected.  Check the voltages at pins 1,2&3 of CN703.  These are the red, green and blue color information comes from the main board.  There must be a voltage equal to [2.5VDC].  This voltage will vary according to the video information.  If this voltage is high, you will get a full white raster with vertical retrace lines all along the screen. if the volte is very low, or no voltage at all, a full black screen will be the result.  Never consider this as a simple and easy to do work, as it needs so many checks at various points.

If there is no voltage at these points, or very low voltage than normal; say about 0.03VDC  or so, go to chroma section at the main A board, and check the voltages at the pins of the chroma IC.  Chroma IC used here in these models are [TDA 8844 N2].
Details about further check with chorma section will be detailed in next post.

HOW TO REPAIR VIDEO OUTPUT SECTION TO SONY WEGA [KV-HA & KW-HA] SEIRS TVs

NO PICTURE, SOUND OK. FULL BRIGHT WHITE SCREEN. NO-ON SCREEN DISPLAY
Check the video output supply voltage at Pin-1 of socket (701).  It should be around 200VDC.  If this voltage is absent, a white screen will be the result.  This is because, all the cathodes [Rg, Rk and Rb] will get no voltage, and will get a full bright raster [Screen],which will have no effect with adjsuting Brighness or Contrast coltrols. On-screen display may be there, but the contrast to display will be very weak.  Here the Screen voltage, EHT are present, but no voltages at the three cathodes of the picture tube.  As emission of CRT is negatively biased, that is, as the cathod voltage go down with repect to screen voltage, the emission will increse. Here as there is no supply voltage, there will be no voltages at the three cathodes of the picture tube [Pin numbers 8, 9, & 10] of crt base socket.  Measure the voltage at these pins.  It should be around 155VDC. if there is no voltage, check the vidwo output supply voltage line as stated above, and find the reason, if it is absent.
Voltage to video output is derived from rectifying the voltage generated at pin number (4) of line output transformer.  There is rectifier diode (D504) and a current limiting resistor (R509) [0.47Ohms/2W].  This rectifed voltage is smoothed by an electrolytic capacitor (C509), and this voltage is supplied to video output section as drive voltage to all video output transistors. If this voltage is found less than normal, or no voltage at all, the above mentioned three components should be checked. if the voltage is found very low, say 130VDC or so, the rectifier diode should be suspected.  In these sections, a special types of diodes are used to rectify the voltage generated by LOT.  All of them will be Fast Recovery type diodes, and the same type should be replaced. It is best to repalce the supply smoothng capacitor [33MFD 250V] along with the diode.
