PHILIPS and ELEMENT TV REPAIR HINTS

PHILIPS 42PF7220/37

No picture, No sound.  TV turns On & OFF automatically.

Missing voltages from the power supply to other boards.  Check and resolder all connection terminals at the connector [C221].

PHILIPS PFL 37 xxxxx LCD TV

TV turns ON, but shuts down for no reason.  It happens each time when switch ON the set by AC mains ON/OFF switch.
Signal to microprocessor get On/OFF.  Develops this fault.  Bad front panel sendor board [infrared].  Capacitor faults. Some of the SMD capacitors fitted on it are leaking, cause voltag drop.

ELEMENT 32" LCD RECEIVER.

TV turns ON.  But, No video or Audio.

If the +12V supply rail drop, this kind of fault can occur.  In practice, it was measure +7.6VDC instead of +12V, and +13VDC instead of +24V
Changed the optocoupler. Check the power supply and replace the voltage control opto-coupler.

VIZIO HDTV FAULTS AND REPAIR TIPS

Cont:
VIZIO L32HDTV10A
No Power.
Power supply switching regulator board fault.  Check the fuse on the power supply board.  If found opened, check for any short circuted components, like capacitors connected in parellel to AC, Rectifier diodes [block].  If no fault found to these component/s, the main switching regulator is faulty.  It will be best to replace this board as card basis, rather than making 'surgery' to it.
The power supply bard number is [DPS-199AP].  If this board is not available, [FS-P201-3M01] can be substituted.
VIZIO - VX32LHDTV10A
All other functions, picture, sound are OK, but remote control function do not works.
Check the remote control handset first for its infrared emission.  The procedure to check the remote control has been given in detail in this blog.  Pull up older posts.  If the remote control handset is found OK. Th remote control sensor inside the set should be checked. Check for any shorted SMD capacitor/s on the infrared sensor board.  In most cases one 1MKF capacitor to this board is found fault.  Remove it from circuit.  Even if there is no capacitor in this place, the remote control function will work properly.
VIZIO - VX42LHDV10A
No video, No sound.
Missing 24V and 12V from the power supply board.  Power supply regulator board fault.  Original power board to this model is [DPS-283AP].  This board can be substituted be [DPS-319AP].
VIZIO - VX37LHDTV10A
Switches ON, shows a blue screen for about 3 seconds and shuts down.
Concentrate on the condition of CCFL lamps in the panel.  If any one among them is burned, this type of fault can occur.
To know about which CCFL lamp has burned, connect the pin number (15) of IC 0Z9966SN, to ground by using a 10KOhms resistor.  By doing this, short circuit protection will be off.  After all repair, remove this resistor from circuit.  With this connection, all the back light CCFL lamps will light up, and the bad one which not lights up can be detected.
VIZIO - P42HDTV10A
Set turns ON.  Has flashing "dots' all over the screen with picture.
REPLACE THE LOGIC CONTROL BOARD [077B].
No other repair should be done.

VIZIO TVs FAULTS AND REPAIR HINTS

VIZIO 42" LCD TV
Inverter boards, both Master and Slave blows occationally.  Within 10  of 12 days
The fault is due to its circuit design, and this fault occur to most models of Vizio TVs.  Start voltages and current will be high, and CCFL lamps changes internal parameters after 1 or 2 years of working period.  To lower the starting current is the only repair can be done, by inserting proper value of resistor, capacitor, and zener diode to lower the starting current.  This fault is not curable by customer, as it need through knowledge in electronics, and ability to follow the circuit and schematic diagram.
VIZIO - P42HDTV10A
No picture, no sound and screen do not comes ON.
Y_Sustain board fault.  There is a fuse [4A] at Y-Sustain on-board.  A suface mount type device.  Check whether it has burned out.  If it has opened, try replacing (YPPD-J018C).  In most cases this work will help you.  Anyway, it will be best to replace the Y-Sustain board as card basis.  Contact the nearest authorised service center for Vizio to buy this board.
VIZIO - GV42L HDTV LCD
No picture, No sound.
Main board should be checked, provided power supply remains OK.
In most cases the IC U-11 will get damaged.  Replace it will solve the problem.
VIZIO - P50HDTV10A
No picture, No sound.  Set powers ON.
The fault is with Y-Sustain board.  [YPPD-016] IC should be checked.  Replace this IC, or replace the bard as card basis.  Replacing it as card basis will be the best.
VIZIO - VP50HDTV20A
Turns ON, shuts down immediately. No picture.
Check the Top and Bottom buffer boards to these model sets.  Replace them at one time.  This is a common problem the this model.
VIZIO - VP422HDTV10A
Set works fine for 10 to 15 minutes, and picture and sound goes out.  No Menu on sereen.  Only flashing lines.
Main board fault.
Replace the main board.  Buy it from authorised service center for Vizio.
VIZIO - GV471HDTV10A
The problem is intermittent.  Sometimes works properly.  Sometime no video or sound or both.
The [1.8V]  voltage regulator MPS1117 on the main board should be checked.  If this voltage drops too much, or not at all, this type of fault can occur.  Replace this regulator  first.  It is on the main board [U5].  If this do not help, replace the main board.
VIZIO VX371HDTV10A
The set tries to turn ON. No video, vertical lines, and no sound.  It shuts OFF after a short while.
Check the fuse at (+12) volt line on the main board. Replace the voltage regulator [FMPS1117] on the main board.

PHILIPS 32PFL5332 - LED BLINKING CODES INORMATION

Cont:-

ERROR-14
Error-14:  (Audio supply)
This error is triggered in case of two low voltage of the audio supplies and therefore a drop of audio supply voltage of below approx: 9V per supply rail or lower than 18V rail to rail.  Also a DC voltage of higher than 1 VDC on speakers will lead to protection and error 14 blinking.  For LCD set, this circuit can be found on schematics SA3, for PDP set this can be found on schematic C.  It should be noted that for 26" models there is only a supply link between the amplifers and standby microcontroller, where as in all other models this link is implemented by audio port line- Pin7 on 1 Mo2

ERROR-18
Error-18 (MPIF-1)
Error-18 is displayed in SAM.  No protection.

ERROR-21
Error-21(HDMI) switch.  When this error occurs the TV will go to protection and the front LED will blink at 3Hz.

ERROR-29
Error-29[AVIP-1]
This error will probably generate extra errors.  Will probably also see errors 31(MPIF) and error-31(AVIP 2).  Error 29 and 31 will always be logged together due to the fact that both AVIPs are inside the PNX2015 and are on the same I2C bus.  In this case, start looking for cause around AVIP(Part ofPNX2015).

ERROR-31
[AVIP 2].

ERROR -34
Error-34 (Tuner-1)
When this error is logged, it is not sure that there is something wrong with the with the tuner itself.  It is also possible that there is something wrong with the communication between the channel decoder and tuner.

ERROR-37
Error-37 [Channel Decoder]
This error will always log error 34 (tuner) extra.  This is due to the fact that the tuner I2C bus is coming from the channel decoder.

ERROR-44
Error-44 [NVM]
This error will never occur because it is masked by error-3(I2C bus 3).  The detection mechanism for error-3 checks on I2C acknowledge of the NVM.  If NVM gives no acknowledge, the standby software assumes that this bus is blocked, the tv goes to protection and error-3 will be blinking.

ERROR-53
Error-53 will indicate that the VIPER has started to function {by reading his boot script, if this would have failed, error-5 would blink} but initialization was never completed because of hardware peripheral problems.  (NAND flash,....) or software initilization problems.  Possible cause could be that there is no valid software loaded.  Try to upgrade to the latest main software version.
*********************************************************************************

PHILIPS 32PFL5332: BLINKING ERROR CODES INFORMATION

ERROR -1
I2C bus 1 blocked.
TV will go to protection and the front LED will blink at 3Hz.  Now it can partially restart the TV via SDM shortcut pins on the SSB.  Depending on the software version it is possible that no further diagnose is possible.  With knowledge that only errors 1,2,4 and 63 result in a 3Hz blinking LED, the range of possible defects is limited.

ERROR -2
I2C bus 2 blocked.
When this error occurs the TV will go to protection and the front LED will blink at 3Hz.  No can restart the the TV partially via the SDM shortcut pins on the SSB.  Due to hardware restriction [I2C bus 2 is the fast I2C bus]; it will be not possible to start up the VIPER and therefore, it is also impossible to read out error codes via ComPair or via blinking LED method.  With knowledge that only errors 1,2,4 and 63 result in a 3Hz blinking LED, the range of possible defects is limited.  When restarted the TV via the SDM shortcut pins and then pressed "CH+" on the remote control, the TV will go to protection again, and the front LED blink at 3Hz again.  This could be an indication that the problem is related to error-2.

ERROR-3
I2C bus 3 blocked.
There are only thre devices on I2C bus-3.  VIPER, Standby processor, and NVM.  Standby processor is the detection device of the error, so this will only occur if the VIPER or the NVM is blocking the Bus.  This error is also be logged when the NVM gives no acknowledge on the I2C bus.  Note that, if the 12V supply is missing [connector M46 on the SSB], the DC/DC supply on the SSB will not work.  Therefore, the VIPER will not get supplies and could block I2C bus-3.  So a missing 12V can also lead to an error-3.

ERROR-4
I2C bus-4 blocked.
Error-4 is displayed in SAM.  No protection.

ERROR-5
Error-5 (Viper doesn't boot)
This error will point to a severe hardware problem around the VIPER [sypplies not OK, VIPER completely dead, I2C between VIPER  and standby processor broken etc:-.

ERROR-7
Error-7 (8-6V error)
Except a physical problem at the 8.6V itself, it is also possible that there is something wrong with the audio DC protection.

ERROR-12
Error-12 (12V error)
Except a physical problem at the 12V itself, it is possible that there is something wrong with the audio DC protection.

PHILIPS 32PFL 5332.

ENTERING THE [SDM] Service Default Mode.

  • Use the standard remote control transmitter and key in the code [062596], directly followed by the "Menu" button.  It is possible that together with the SDM, the main menu will appear.  To switch it Off, push the Menu button, once again.
  • Short the two solder pads on the SSB,  with the indication SDM for a moment.  These solder pads are located on the top of the SSB.  Activation can be performed in all modes, except when the set has the problem with the Standby processor.
  • After activating this mode, SDM will appear at the upper right corner of the screen ; if you have picture.
HOW TO NAVIGATE
  • When you press the Menu button on the remote control, the set will toggle between SDM and normal user menu, with SDM mode still active in the background.
  • To exit from SDM mode,
  • Switch the set to Standby via remote transmitter.
  • Via a standard customer RC transmitter:  Key in "00" sequence.
BLINKING LED PROCEDURE

The blinking LED procedure can be split up into two situations.
  1. Blinking LED procedure in case of a protection detected by the standby processor.  In this case the error is automatically blinks.  Therefore you do not have to do anything special, just read out the blinks.  A long blink indicate the decimal digit, and a short one indicates the units.
  2. Blinking LED procedure in the "ON" state.  Via this procedure, you can make the contents of the error buffer visible via the front LED.  This is especially useful for fault finding, when there is no picture.
When blinking LED procedure is activated in ON state, the front LED will show the contents of error buffer by blinks.  Error code >10 are shown as follows.
  1. "n" long blinks (where "n"= 1 to 9), indicating decimal digit,
  2. A pause of 1.5s,
  3. "n" short blinks (where n = 1 to 9),
  4. A pause of approx: 3s,
  5. When all error codes are displayed, the sequence finishes with a LED blink of 3s,
  6. And the sequence starts again.
Example: Error 12 9 6 0 0
After activation of SDM, the front LED will show:
  1. One  long blinks of 750ms (Which is an indication of the decimal digit), followed by a pause of 1.5s.
  2. Two short blinks of 250ms followed by a pause of 3s,
  3. Nine short blinks followed by a pause of 3s,
  4. Six short blinds followed by a pause of 3s,
  5. One long blink of 3s to finish the sequence,
  6. The sequence starts again.
HOW TO ACTIVATE THIS FUNCTION?
  • Activate SDM.  The blinking front LED will show the entire contents of error buffer (this works in normal operation mode).
  • Transmit the commands 'Mute"- "062500" - "OK" with normal remote control.  The complete error buffer is shown.  Take notice that it take some seconds before the blinking LED starts.
  • Transmit the commands "Mute"-"06250x"-"Ok" with a normal remote control, where "x" is the number between 1 and 5.  When "x" =1; the last detected error is shown, "x" =2; the second last error etc:-  Take notice that it take some seconds before the LED starts blinking.

PANASONIC TH-50PZ85U [POWER SUPPLY FAULT-REPAIR HINTS]

FAULT

SET TURNS ON; BUT SHUTS DOWN WITHIN 4 SECONDS, AND STANDBY LIGHT BLINKS 10 TIMES.

10 Blinks of Standby light to Panasonic Plasma indicates the power supply section circuit should be looked into.

This set is fitted with a power supply board [ETX2MM704MG]  It is a common fault to these model power supplies, that, there will be missing voltages from it.  Even though a new baord can poise this problem.  Even though it will work perfectly, it will begin to show this problem again within a short period of time, say weeks or months.  If you are handy in electronc equipments' repair, it will be best to replace this board with [ETX2MM705NG] model poser board.  It is a different board, but connectors are exactly same to each other, and [706NG] is more powerful too. The board has same voltages, same connector confujuration and signal paths.  There is no need to adjust anything, and the board is cheaper than [704MG].

704MG main power board and small stand by power supply removed and  706NG should be installed.  You must have sound knowledge in electronics, and must have enough experience in work with power supply boards.  Must have patience and concentration.
The former said power supply board is bigger in size.  So there is a need to modify coupling holders to to fix the board in place.  See the pictures of both boards.

ETX2MM704MG
ETX2MM706NG
It can be seated well by making holes, and fix one extra holder to aluminium casing of plasma panel. It fits perfect; and all the connectors are the same.  Some wires need to increase in length, as they might be short enough to reach the connecting sockets.

An other fault that can occur to these models Plasma TVs are:

TV will work well on HDMI input, while no other inputs or front panel buttons will work. This fault is due to missing software on its internal flash memory.  Bad tuner board can cause this problem.

PANASONIC 42" PLASMA TV REPAIR HINTS SERVICE EXPERIENCE

Fault:
TV will turn ON.  Will turn OFF as soon as the picture appears.  Repeats the same, whenever switch ON.

Checked all the voltages from main power supply regulator board.  Set switched ON, after connecting digital multimeter, set to voltage range [Auto range], between (+15) Volt and ground.

Noted that, the (+15V) line drops its voltage, when the set receive picture, goes very low, into protection mode.  Checked all the related components.  Concentrated on audio output stage circuit.  Disconnected the speakers by unplugging the speaker wire from the socket.

Without speaker, the set began to work fine.  Checked the speakers.  One among the speakers' voice coil was shorted to its metal body [internally, not repairable]; where as, metal body of the speaker is grounded.  A direct short occured to (+15V) to ground, and this short circuit energised the short circuit protection, and it has been happening.  Replaced the speaker, rectified the problem.  This kind of problem is very rare.  This was for the first time I experience this type of fault, since 40 years of my service work.  Learned a good lesson indeed.

Main symptoms are:

  • Flashing Pixels on the screen.
  • Turn ON, but no Video & Sound.
  • No Power.
  • No power light on front panel.
  • Hard to turn ON.
  • Turn ON after a long period of time. Sometimes takes 30 minutes or so.
  • Turn ON, but turns OFF automatically.

PLASMA TVs FAULT FINDING AND REPAIR -1

PLASMA TVs - 1

How these Plasma TV screen works?

The idea of plasma display is to illuminate a colored gas, like Neon or Xenon.  You see on the screen is these burning gases between two pieces of glass.  The screen has a complex structure, has millions of pixels, and each pixel is powered by tiny electrodes and has its own gas and color.  The Plasma TV problems, starts with its screen itself.  If plasma screen is broken, there is no repair other than replacement.  It has a protection screen in front of it.  If the protection screen has broken, can be replaced, and won't cost more.  But with actual plasma screen, the things are different.  It will cost nearly to the cost of a new TV, including service charges.  Plasma screen consists of two pieces of glass with gas in between them, as stated above.  The gas is not re-chargable. These gas pixels are controlled by small electrodes.  Each pixel contain three colored sub-pixels  (Red, Green and Blue).  Plasma screen works in two steps.  Gas Ignition, and Picture development.

  • The ignition is controlled by Power supply, Logic control, X Sustain or Z Sustain boards and Screen.
  • Picture is developed by Power Supply, Video control or scaler board, Logic control board, X Sustain board, Y Sustain board, Buffer boards and Screen.
Common problems seen with Plasma TVs are, Flashing Dots or Pixels, when the screen is cold.  This is the symptom of bad screen.
Colors are distorted to some parts of the screen. Again bad screen.
Vertical lines on picture.
Flashing red dots on some part of the screen.

Screen problems will be difficult to rectify.  Not difficult, it is not possible. But panel problems can be rectified.  Plasma TVs are very sensitve to AC input voltage.  Make sure that the plug you connected the Plasma TV with wall socket have no sparks or loose contacts.  Proper cooling system should be installed, if company did not provided it.  do not leave the TV on only one channel for a long time.  Change channels occationaly  The power to plasma should be isolated.  That is, no other load should be taken from the same line to which plasma TV is loaded.  Unlike CRT based TVS, plasma TVs do not effected by external magnetic fields.

HOW TO REPLACE FAULTY T- CON BOARD

Part-2

Normally T'Con board can be located fitted with LCD panel, either horizontally or vertically.  In most sets, it will be shielded withe a metal case, screwed upon it, which acts as an electrostatic shield, as well as a heatsink to main processor IC.  Upon unscrewing out the metal shield, the T'Con board is exposed, secured by screwing it on to the chassis.
See the normal position to a T'Con board:

After locating the T'Con board, carefully check it for any capacitor fault or any on board surace mounted fuse blown up.  Refer the schematic diagram of the Tv under service for details.  If found any, replace them and try once more by connecting it.  Be careful when unplugging the flat cable connections to this board.  Look for any lock, if any, at the side of each connecting sockets.  If there is such locks, pull out the strip wires only after releasing them.  See a typical connection.

Be very patient, and concentrate only to work you are doing.  Never handle board or wire with careless.  As you can see, no ICs on it can be replaced by normal soldering techniques.  The board  has been manufactured by automatic PPS; [Pick Place and Solder], machines controlled by computer and robotic hands.   Before unscrew the board out from chassis, just unplug all the flat cable connections, and reinsert them as it was.  Check once more by switch ON the set, after all connection has been done properly.  Keep all the wire dressings same as before. If you have damaged any strip wires that connected with, not use it any more.  Buy new ones' of same connection numbers and diamensions.  These flat cables can be bought from most of the electronic spare part selling shops.

In rare cases, there might be some alignment be done after this board replacement.  To do it, you have to enter the service mode option to your set.  If you are not sound in electronics, seek tech support.  Never enter to service mode option, and change data values there, without proper knowledge.  it might make the set irresponsive to any further commands.

HOW TO REPLACE A FAULTY T'CON BOARD TO LCD TELEVISIONS

Part -1
What is T'Con board.  This is the board that controls the pixels in an LCD television.  It is connected between main digital board, and LCD panel.  Fault to this board is a common problem to all brands of lCD TVs.
For a Sony KDL52XBR5, if its stand by light blinks 5 times, then a pause, again blinks 5 imes, means T'Con error.  The T'Con board is attached to the LCD panel and is included with a  new LCD panel along with the inverter board.  The first check to do is, check the connections of flat cables to them. See the picture of some of flat cables connected to T'Con board.

How to make sure that the T'Con board is faulty.  So many strange screens will be displayed, if T'Con board is faulty.  Here are pictures of some of them.
In most cases TV may show other symptoms too. If T'Con boards' processor IC gets direct shorted, it will apply a more load to TVs power supply section, and in some sets the technician might go before it. Check all the connections to both end of each ribbon cable connected to this board.  Normally, these boards are not repairable, except for some capacitors or SMD type fuses can.  How a T'Con board look like.  This is the picture of a typical T'Con board.  The shape and appearance to this board may differ to different TVs.

For Sony KDL32BX300, six blinks, pause, six blinks indicates a back light error and location is on the LCD panel. Not with T'Con board. The LCD panel includes the "Inverter MT board" and T'Con control MT board.    So different brands of televisions will show different blinking codes.  The technician must fully aware of these blinking codes.

SONY WEGA FLAT CRT TVs SIX OR SEVEN BLINKS OF STANDBY LIGHT REPAIR HINTS

This TV has excellent quality and no restrictions in viewing angles.  Other than its size and weight it is much better than what is available with newer technologies at this time.

The most common fault to these TVs are, blinking standby light.  Among them, most common are six of seven time blinks, and either goes to standby, or OFF.  There is a common solution for this problem too.  If IC 8002 or IC6501 on the D board is found faulty in most cases.  Either only one among them might be faulty, but it is a good practice to replace both of them at the same time.  IC number is [MCZ 3001DB].  How to access this part.  you have to open the back cover of the TV.  You must have knowledge in electronics.

It is possible to remote the entire back shell of the TV, by removing all of its screws, and sliding it off.  There are a lot of screws, about a dozen of them which holds the back cover in place.  Removing the back cover allows access D board.
Before removing the cover, just unplug the TV from AC mains wall socket, and allow a few hours to the high voltages to dissipate so as to avoid shock hazards.

Some of the connectors are easy to remove, but three high voltage wires connected to CRT is not easy to unplug connections, and they should not be unplugged at all.
There are a number of connectors, need to be flip upwards, to disconnect the D board from an other adjacent board.  If pull them upward, they will unsnap and pivot up 90  degrees.  Unplug all the other cables and remove eight screws.  The board will come out far enough to rotate it into position.  Such is the mechanical fittings arranged by Sony, to do service work to this board.  You must have a stubby screw driver to remove one screw that is far forward and hidden between two connectors, and it comes just under the picture tube.  Locate the ICs here on D board.  IC 8002&IC6501.  Desolder them out from the circuit baord.  Use a desoldering pump to suck out solder from soler terminals.

Beware that each chip has two pins are not soldered to board, and keep them like it is.  Take note of the orientation of the chips.  There is a notch on one end facing the closest edge of the board.  Never install the chip backwords.  If you use sockets in case, you ever to do this repair again, since having to unsolder these chips is most of the work.

After replacing ICs with sockets, install the replacement ICs.  Only one among these chips might be bad, but it is best to replace both at the same time.  It might be necessary to squeeze the pins together to get the legs aligned with the holes in the socket.  This style of ICs has its leges spread out by default, and so they might not automatically align unless you pre-bend them inward a little to align the the holes in the socket.  Carefully examine the chips after installation, make sure that the legs made it into socket.  After re-installing the D board and attaching all the cables, it would be a good practice to test it to make sure the repair worked, before reinstalling the cover.

PHILIPS 50PFP 5332/37 - NO START. BLINKING LIGTS AT THE FRONT PANEL

The set switches ON, but no screen. No sound. Blue light is in ON mode, is blinking 5 times, a short pause and then starts blinking again. After this short pause, the light may blink three of four times in rapid succession.

The fault might be either to its main power regulator board, or Y sustain board. To make sure which section has the fault, disconnect the Y Sustain power supply connection and turn on the set.  If the unit stays ON with no red light, then the Y-Sustain board is faulty.

To locate Y Sustain board, open the back cover of the TV.  Looking from the back of the TV, Y-Sustain board can be located at its left side, and the main Power Regulator board at the center.

Even if the unit behaves the same, with blinking light, make sure that the main power regulator board has the fault.  It will be best to replace this board as card basis, especially to plasma TVs, rather than making 'surgery' to it.

SONY LCD TV BLINKING CODES

With all TV sets manufactured after 1993, Sony has included a self  fault detection circuit, which will detect fatal faults to the internal circuit.  These fault indications will be shown as series of blinking of standby light at TVs front panel.

Normally, when the set is switched ON, the standby light at its front panel will blink once and will go OFF after the set has began to work normally.  If any fault is detected when the set is switched ON, the standby light will begin to blink.  The number of blinks it gives is an important information about the internal faulty section.

So the number of blink at one time, must be counted.  You have to count this number once again after switch the set ON by its main power ON/OFF switch at its front panel, and confirm that the number of blinks occur is correct.

BLINKING CODES

[00] Blink => No error Detected.  The set is OK.
[01] Blink => Is reserved for future use.
