HOW TO DISCHARGE THE ANODE OF THE PICTURE TUBE

If you do not feel comfortable performing these repairs, or feel you are not qualified to perform these repairs in a safe manner, please do not risk trying to do so. Seek the assistance of a qualified service technician.  Always unplug TV’s AC power cord from the wall before:  Removing or reinstalling any component, printed circuit board, module, or a plug connection.

Never use a heat sink as a ground connection for your test equipment. You should find the proper chassis ground for this.

If you are working on a CRT type projection TV set, you have three picture tubes that should be discharged to prevent accidental shock. You can discharge the picture tube’s anode at any of the R, G, or B outputs on the High Voltage distribution block only by:

First connecting one end of an insulated clip lead to the ground on the back of the picture tube, or the mounting plate of the picture tube. Then touch the other end of the insulated clip lead to the wire coming out of the High voltage distribution block, or by using a long handled screwdriver, with the clip lead attached and slid up underneath the rubber boot on the picture tube High Voltage connection.

All TV sets that have a picture tube will have a high voltage transformer with a heavy red wire that runs up and connects to the picture tube with a suction cup. Under there is an average of 32,000 volts when the sets on. Even when the set is off, it can hold a large electrical charge. If it zaps or bites you, it can make a grown man cry, and not only that, can stop your heart! Therefore, the point is to never ever stick a screwdriver under the HV cap even if it is unplugged

If the cap has to be removed, attach one end of a clip lead to the metal exposed strap that is around the picture tube, and the other end to the screwdriver. Without the metal blade of the screwdriver being exposed to you, slide the screwdriver under the cap slowly. There should be a little pop if there is any voltage left. Wait for a second or two, remove the screwdriver, and pinch the top of the cap perpendicular to the wire while pulling up on it. Never pull on the wire. With the cap off, clip the clip lead to the anode connection on the tube while the other end stays on the grounding strap.

  • The Info Menu appears on the left side of the screen by pressing the  “I” information key. The selected submenu appears to the right next to the information menu.
  • The green marker is moved to the relevant sub-menu item with the {_ / _} buttons. The marker moves to the selected sub-menu by pressing the { _ } button.
  • Select < back with the {_ / _} buttons to return to the info menu from the various sub-menus. The marker moves back to the info menu by pressing the { _ } button.
  • To store a setting, press the “OK” button; “OK.. save” is temporarily displayed in red. Press the  TV -button to leave the menu.
Settings in service mode menu:
  • Version number:   mark the software version.  For a new initialization of the NVM values, without adjusting the geometry settings, the version number must be changed, stored, leave the service mode and start it again using the mains switch.
  • NVM reset initializes all NVM values in the eeprom IC905 with geometry values. Setting to on, store, leave the service mode and start it again using the mains switch. Before the initialization you can write the service mode parameters in the alignment table.
The following settings should be checked after each initialization and, where necessary, set properly again:

picture size:    4:3 or 16:9 picture tube
picture tube:   type of the picture tube

Important: Change this value only, if is absolutely necessary.  A change is programming all parameters of the picture tube. If you can`t find the correct type of the picture tube, select “USER PICTUB” and set all parameters manual.

TO ENTER SERVICE MODE
  • Before activating service mode set suited test pattern. Set medium brightness, color, contrast, sharpness, noise and picture mode.
  • A standard 4:3 test pattern is necessary for the geometry adjustment. The chassis for 16:9 requires a 4:3 test pattern covering the entire area to be set in the decoder mode, thus creating a horizontal extension (horizontal ellipses).
To enter service mode, press the buttons "MUTE"  "Red" (picture menu) and ‘TVon remote control one after another.

KEY FUNCTIONS IN SERVICE MODE

Red button:          select menu line or digit
Buttons ▲ / ▼ :   select further parameters
Buttons ◄ ► :     change parameters
OK button:           store the changes
TV button:           leave Service Mode

Child lock-code global ON / OFF

OFF: During the search operation all channels are not "prepared" for a possible activation of the childproof lock and have to be individually set.
ON: During the search operation all channels are "prepared" for a possible activation of the childproof lock.

Child lock-code reset

ON: To deactivate the childproof lock, set to ON.
After switching on with the mains switch again, the childproof lock is switched off.

G2 [screen] adjustment
After an operating time of approx. 30 minutes set a gray bar test pattern. Actuate the G2 controller to set the cathode with the largest value (measured) in such a way that the measured value only just changes from a single –digit numerical value to a two-digit value.

Focus adjustment
Set a test pattern and set color, brightness and contrast to nominal value. With Focus control set to optimum normal focus. For bi-focus tubes (16:9/32"-tubes with separate focus block) adjust the left control (FOC-L) so that horizontal lines are refocused to a minimum over the complete image width in vertical direction. Adjust the right control (FOC-H) so that vertical lines are refocused to a minimum in horizontal direction. The adjustment must be repeated reciprocally.

Cut off / white drive (black-white balance)
Cut off: Set the three cutoff values so that the darker grey areas turn achromatic. The default values of the cutoff setting points are 50. Leave the value of the cathode with the middle controlled value as it is, set the two other cathodes.
White drive: The default values of the White Drive setting points are 128. If the picture seems too “cold” reduce the white drive blue setting point. If the picture seems too “warm” turn the white drive red setting point back.

Hints for the real-flat picture tube

The surface of the screen is covered with a laminated and 40% light-absorbent film with a hard coating. Under no circumstances may this be damaged.

Under no circumstances:-
May the screen be wiped with conventional glass cleaning fluid.
May the screen be brought into contact with abrasive materials.
May soiling be removed by polishing or scouring.
To clean off sticky substances, the cloth can be moistened with acetone.

SCHNEIDER _ 29M432 _ SERVICE MODE _ ADJUSTMENTS

  1. Before activating service mode, supply appropriate test picture. Set brightness, contrast, colour, contour and tone to medium values.
  2. For geometry alignment a 4:3 test picture conforming to standards is required.
