- Remove the lens and C-Element (convex lens).
- Remove the convex lens taking care not to scratch it. One side will be dry and the other side will be a slimey scum.
- Use Denatured Alcohol and clean all of the scum and old fluid off of the convex lens (also called: C element or Fish-Eye), the expansion chamber and the inside of the fluid chamber. If you do not do this your problem will return again within 6 months.
- Can purchase Denatured Alcohol wherever you buy paint (Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware). It is usually kept next to the paint thinners and mineral spirits. Do not use rubbing alcohol as it will make the rubber seals fail.
- Let the alcohol evaporate so everything is dry.
- Install a new seal.
- Can purchase new seals from Sears or MCMelectronics. The part number for the seal varies depending on the model.
- After making sure everything is clean and there is no lint residue, reassemble the convex lens and optics to the picture tube with a new seal.
- Install new fluid, and take extra care to avoid spilling any fluid. If fluid gets under the yoke, you will have to remove the yoke and clean all spilled residue from the picture tube and yoke windings with denatured alcohol, failure to do so will result in a yoke failure.
- Fill the chamber all of the way to the top. (It is normal to see bubbles in the fluid at this point. They are usually small and you may have a very high number of them. But when you run the set, the bubbles rise up into the expansion chamber.) Then, install the filler plug.
